NLC Member Highlight: Katherine Miller

Each month, RAINN features a member of its National Leadership Council (NLC). The NLC is a group of dedicated individuals who have shown their commitment to RAINN’s mission of supporting survivors and ending sexual violence. This month we checked in with RAINN board member, Katherine Miller.

Why are you passionate about ending sexual violence?

Sometimes it feels naïve to even dream about a world without sexual violence. Is it even possible? It would mean we live in a world where all crimes of sexual violence are fully prosecuted and there are real consequences for the perpetrators. It would also mean that we will have removed stigma, shame, and mistrust from the lives of survivors. They deserve our trust and our support. But I think we can put an end to most sexual violence. I also know that we must do this. One in every six women is a victim of sexual violence. That means we all know and love someone who has been victimized. So we need to keep fighting for policy change, for changing how survivors are viewed and treated, and for more resources to both prosecute offenders and support survivors.

How can we all be better supporters and advocates for survivors in our lives?

First and foremost be open to just listening, and not talking! When a survivor shares their experience they are incredibly vulnerable, open, and trusting. It is important to let them share in their own way, at their own pace. It is also important for them to feel heard, respected, and not dismissed. If you don’t know what to say or how to advise them, then reach out to organizations such as RAINN for advice. I don’t think people know how many resources are out there for the friends and family of survivors. By listening and working with experts, you’ll be better prepared to support your friend or family member.

Why did you want to be a part of RAINN’s National Leadership Council?

RAINN is the only organization I know that is working at every level to create the conditions to end sexual violence. It advocates for stronger laws that support victims. It is building new tools to help survivors connect with important resources. It is working with media and corporations to reframe the conversation around sexual violence. RAINN stands with survivors—so I wanted to stand with RAINN. Being part of the NLC gives me the opportunity to work on this important issue.
