Each month, RAINN features a member of its National Leadership Council (NLC). The NLC is a group of dedicated individuals who have shown their commitment to RAINN’s mission of supporting survivors and ending sexual violence. This month we checked in with actor, activist, and philanthropist, Torrey DeVitto.
Why are you passionate about ending sexual violence?
Because everyone deserves to feel safe in their own body. Everyone deserves to feel that their body is a sacred temple that is meant to be honored and cherished—not abused or misused.
How can we all be better supporters and advocates for survivors in our lives?
We can be great listeners. Just listening is sometimes the most valuable thing you can offer. And we can show up more. There is no time limit on trauma and grief. If you know someone who has survived sexual assault, show up for them. Physically be there with them to sit and show support. Show them that they don’t have to go through this trauma, anger, and sadness alone. Ask them what they need. “How can I help you?” might be the exact thing that they need to hear. Show up with your love, strength, and compassion.
Why did you want to be a part of RAINN’s National Leadership Council?
I had the opportunity through RAINN to sit down at dinner with a group of survivors. I left that table feeling so inspired and in awe of their willingness to be vulnerable and raw for the sake of hoping that, by sharing their story, they would be helping another survivor heal and know that they are not alone. I knew that I wanted to do whatever I could to help aid them in their march toward ending sexual violence and bring more awareness to this cause. I am beyond proud to be a part of such a beautiful organization that is doing such integral work.
