In an episode airing today, viewers of the CW's popular show Reign witnessed a disturbing scene. Mary, Queen of Scots, played by Australian actress Adelaide Kane, is sexually assaulted. To bridge the gap between the storyline, set in the 16th century, and the experiences of the CW's young audience, the show collaborated with RAINN on a PSA for the National Sexual Assault Hotline.
In the PSA, Adelaide Kane speaks directly to viewers who have been impacted by this crime — encouraging them to come forward and get the help that they deserve.
During this season of Reign, viewers will see Mary deal with the traumatic aftermath of the rape. Executive producer Laurie McCarthy, who co-wrote the episode with writer Nancy Won, expressed her commitment to highlighting experiences that many survivors face.
"Rape and violence are issues women -- even women in positions of power -- have had to deal with through the ages," said McCarthy. "I wanted to make sure we portrayed the crime and the emotional trauma it causes its victims with the respect it deserves. By partnering with RAINN and creating a PSA, the show wants to bring awareness to and reinforce the gravity of the crime."
The PSA will be shown across all digital platforms, including Hulu and video on demand.
